The Man Burns Tonight - by Donn Cortez

The Alchemist — Thu, 08/27/2009 - 7:03am

The website of Donn Cortez

During my second year at Burning Man a camp mate had arranged to have an author give a reading from his book at our camp, and luckily for those of us who were there the publisher had given him some copies to give away and sign. The book was "The Man Burns Tonight" and it was a murder mystery set at the Burning Man festival.

The story line was fairly well written and brought you into the place of the main character rather well, so that you could easily envision what was going on and empathize with him as his life was warped completely out of his control, until he learned how the city really works and how to work with it rather that try to fight it.

The author was a long time burner himself and had incorporated his experiences of the event into the story so well that as I read my copy of the book a few weeks later it transported me right back to the playa (side note: Burning Man is held on a dry lake bed, a "playa", and so those who attend the event often refer to the location as "the Playa"). the story had places and people that I'd seen and met, it was the city that I knew and loved. It resonated with me so well because of it's descriptions of the event, that it became one of my most treasured books in my library. One that I can pull out and read whenever I need a playa fix. It's also a book that I recommend to my friends who want to know why the event calls me so strongly.

And, as I found out when I pulled up the affiliate link below, the books seems to have become a bit of a collectors item, going for several times it's face value. It's nice to know, but I'm sure as hell not selling my copy.

Disclosure: this is an affiliate link, so I do get paid if you purchase through this link. You don't have to buy through here, but I do appreciate it.
